S250-FIT Showcased for the First Time by Our Partners Mevion During NPC 2024 Factory Tour

Leo Cancer Care's upright patient positioning system and CT scanner, placed in front of Mevion's world's smallest Proton Therapy accelerator at the NPC factory tour.

On April 6th, 2024, Mevion Medical Systems welcomed attendees of the National Proton Conference to its Littleton, MA headquarters for an exclusive look behind closed doors. The tour included six presentations from various departments, highlighting the development of the Mevion S250-FIT. This new system, revealed for the first time during the tour, includes our upright patient positioning system and CT scanner, changing the landscape of proton therapy, by removing the need for a large rotating gantry. Conventional systems utilise these large gantries to rotate the beam, our solution, instead replaces this with patient rotation. In essence, we simply rotate the lighter object, reducing the size and therefore the cost of Proton Therapy equipment.

A standout moment of the tour was the first public unveiling of the MEVION S250-FIT. The Mevion team, Adam Molzahn, Head of Global Systems Architecture, and Dr. Rocky Owen, Clinical R&D Engineer and Relationship Manager, guided attendees through the never-before-seen FIT vault and treatment room.

Key Features of the FIT System Presented :

  • HYPERSCAN® Pencil Beam Scanning for Intensity Modulated Proton Therapy (IMPT) with a proton MLC

  • Upright patient positioning by Leo Cancer Care

  • CT imaging for IGRT and adaptive treatment by Leo Cancer Care

FIT for Success

Jeff Anderson, Director of Site Design and Construction, presenting how the S250-FIT can be integrated into an existing LINAC bunker.

Jeff Anderson, Director of Site Design and Construction, discussed how the MEVION S250-FIT is designed for easy clinical integration. With a simplified electrical system and compact cooling solution, the FIT system reduces installation complexity and space needs while maintaining strong performance. Its streamlined design allows for quick integration in various clinical settings, including existing LINAC vaults.

Upright Patient Positioning Demonstration

Lydia Ooyama (Senior Product Manager) and Shane Ikner (Training Manager from Leo Cancer Care) demonstrated the simulation room, where our upright patient positioning system is installed. The team showed how initial simulation patient setups can be performed outside the treatment room to save time and increase patient throughput.

Our Chief Scientific Officer, Niek Schreuder, also supported the Mevion team, explaining the potential benefits of Upright Radiotherapy. Niek highlighted key indications and how the Leo Cancer Care team has considered future pediatric treatments in their approach.
